Before Departure

18 Reminders for Your Walk-Around

These are the same reminders included in the PDF, grouped into 6 trailer areas. Follow your training, the equipment manufacturer's instructions, and your carrier's inspection and reporting procedures.

Trailer & Trip Details

Confirm you have the right trailer, and find out what has already been reported on it.

  • Match the unit number to your dispatch paperwork.
  • Note load status and any access limits.
  • Review the last inspection report for signed-off defects.

Coupling & Connections

Check the trailer's coupling area and the air and electrical lines serving it.

  • Check the trailer kingpin and upper coupler area for visible damage.
  • Trace air and electrical lines for cuts or loose fittings.
  • Check the landing gear is raised and not bent.

Tires, Wheels & Structure

Work around the trailer, checking each wheel position and then the frame and structure.

  • At each wheel: cuts, bulges, exposed cord, or low tire.
  • Check rims for cracks, rust streaks at the studs, loose nuts.
  • Note grease on a hub, fluid beneath it, or frame damage.

Lights, Reflectors & ABS

Confirm each required lamp works, the reflective surfaces are visible, and the ABS lamp goes out.

  • With lights on, check each position, both sides.
  • Note any lamp dark, cracked, or holding water.
  • Check reflectors and tape; record an ABS lamp that stays lit.

Doors, Seals & Load

Check that the trailer closes and secures, and that the load matches your paperwork.

  • Work the doors; note hinges or latches that bind.
  • Check door seals and roof line for tears or staining.
  • On a sealed load, confirm the seal number.

Brakes & Air Lines

Look at what you can see of the brake system, then confirm the trailer responds.

  • Look behind each wheel for loose or missing brake parts.
  • Listen for air escaping at glad hands, lines, chambers.
  • Confirm brakes apply and release as you were trained.

Start with the Assigned Trailer

Record the trailer or unit number so your notes identify the right equipment. A useful concern report says what you observed and where: for example, a lamp that does not illuminate or visible damage near a particular wheel. Include the location on the trailer rather than a broad note such as “lights” or “tire problem.”

If a concern was reported previously, check its status through your carrier's process. This worksheet is a place to organize observations; it does not replace any required inspection report or repair record.

Keep Observation and Repair Separate

Describe what you can see from a safe position and leave the testing to the procedures you were trained on. You do not need to name a failed part to report a concern clearly. For example, “left rear marker lamp dark” is more useful to a technician than “lights not right.” Say what you noticed, where it is, and whether it was already reported.

This resource focuses on the trailer. It does not cover every check required for the tractor, vehicle combination, cargo, or operation.
